What is the Purpose of a Catalytic Converter?

In 1970, the United States government passed and enacted the Clean Air Act. Included in that piece of legislation was the requirement for all car manufacturers to include a catalytic converter in each car’s exhaust system. The Clean Air Act was the first of a short line of government actions to clean the environment.
